SE22 Piano School

As a Dulwich Photographer I’m extremely lucky to be a part of  Dulwich’s vibrant community. It’s a special area South London that’s culturally diverse and home to some very talented people.

One such Dulwich talent is Lorraine Liyanage who runs the renowned SE22 Piano School. I met Lorraine a couple of years ago when I was searching the East Dulwich Forum for some Goodwood Festival of Speed tickets. Lorraine is an exceptional pianist with over 15 years experience in private piano teaching. The SE22 Piano School is a growing business, originally founded in 1998 in North London, offering piano tuition to students in and around Southwark with around 70 students aged from 4 to 60. All styles of music are covered plus improvisation, theory, aural training and preparation for scholarship entry to local schools and conservatoires. Students regularly achieve distinctions at all levels and their results can be viewed on the SE22 Piano School web-site.

The school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities to provide students with a well-rounded musical education. In February 2011 students played on stage at Cadogan Hall in Sloane Sq with the Southbank Sinfonia Orchestra. Twice-yearly student recitals are the highlight of the social calendar and the last concert at Kingsdale Foundation School drew well over 100 parents, friends and family. This June will see a Summer Charity Piano Recital at Dulwich College as a fundraising for the Surrey Docks City Farm, the chosen charity for 2011.

Three piano teachers teach at SE22 Piano School Monday to Saturday:

Lorraine Liyanage has taught piano for over ten years at independent and private piano schools in Ealing, Northwood and Islington. She started her teaching business in East Dulwich in September 2007 and is established as the premier piano teacher in SE22 and surrounding area.

Gabrielle Messeder is a music graduate from City University and has a particular specialism for Jazz piano. She comes from a very musical family. Her father Andre is a professional bassist and her mother Jan sings with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Rachel Bishop recently completed her teacher training with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and focusses her teaching practice on Key Stages 1 and 2. She is currently studying at the British Kodaly Academy to enhance her Early Years teaching skills for her young students aged 3 and 4.

SE22 Piano School also offers a piano scholarship each academic year and are currently accepting applications for September 2011 entry.
